What is a stock?
A stock represents ownership in a company. When you buy a stock, you become a shareholder — an owner of part of that business.
There are generally two types of stock: common and preferred. Common stock provides voting rights at shareholder meetings and a share of the company’s profits through the payment of dividends. Preferred stock holders have a higher claim to earnings and assets and receive dividends before common stock holders, but usually do not have voting rights.
Some stocks are fractionable, so you can buy just a portion of a share. Others are non-fractionable and must be purchased as whole shares. This depends on the company or platform offering.
What is an ETF?
An ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is a basket of different investments, such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, that you can buy and sell like a single stock. ETFs allow small investors to diversify their risk over a broad spread of investments, tracking an index, while offering the flexibility of trading like a share.
